Ginger golden delight syrup recipe

In our post Incredible Edible Ginger we shared just a few of the healing properties of ginger that we discovered in the research. Studies have shown ginger to be effective at helping with nausea, inflammation, thrombosis, menstrual cramps, regaining muscle strength after intense exercise, and is potentially even cancer fighting. See our post for links to the studies

So… if after all that impressive literature about ginger you’re thinking ‘why not add a bit more into my life?!’ then we’ve got a recipe for you! And here it is from Rebel Katheryna:

The main ingredient for my Golden Delight syrup is of course… ginger! I also added turmeric as another super root. The healing properties of ginger’s cousin turmeric (Curcuma longa) actually rival those of ginger but since ginger is the star here, we’ll just mention that turmeric has also been used for thousands of years for healing. Studies support turmeric’s role in helping with anxiety, metabolic syndrome, inflammation, arthritis, and hyperlipidemia (1). Like ginger, turmeric is extra interesting for RR’s integrative approach as it might help with muscle soreness due to exercise and aid in recovery (2). Research has also suggested benefits for healthy people such as lowering lowered triglyceride levels (but not total cholesterol, LDL, or HDL levels)(1).

So, the syrup has super ginger, super turmeric and… allspice. It might seem random but turmeric suffers from poor bioavailability (it doesn’t absorb well, and is metabolised and eliminated quickly), and pepper increases the bioavailability of turmeric by 2,000%. (1) So I added it in!
Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), another cousin of ginger not only tastes amazing but also has a number of famous healing properties including aiding with inflammation.

I added apples because they are a good source of soluble fiber, especially pectin, which helps control insulin levels by slowing the release of sugar into the bloodstream. Finally, since citrus fruits have long been valued for their wholesome nutritious and antioxidant properties I included Lemons (high in vitamin C, folate, potassium, flavonoids and limonin’s), and Grapefruit (high in vitamin A and C).

Recipe

I created this recipe based on one found on www.preppie-and-me.de, and adjusted it to my taste.

250

gr

Zingiber officinale

50

gr

Curcuma longa

1

l

Water

2

Appels

3

Lemons

1

Grapefruit

10

Dried Allspice berries

10

Cardamom seeds

500

gr

Raw cane sugar

  1. With the kitchen aid juice the ginger and turmeric. Pour the juice into a pot
  2. Juice the apples, lemons, and grapefruit. Set juice aside
  3. Add the pulp and spices
  4. Let simmer for 20 minutes
  5. Strain the liquid and pour it back into the pot
  6. Add raw sugar to the pot, let simmer for 15 minutes
  7. Let cool down to 35°
  8. Add the juice from the apples, lemons, and grapefruit
  9. Pour into sterilised brown bottle
  10. Label

The syrup can be stored in the fridge for a couple of weeks, as the sugars and the citrus act as conservation agents.

Golden Delight is a very spicy and tasty syrup which can be consumed either diluted in sparkling or still water or drunk pure, either warm or cold.

I hope you enjoy this recipe and if you make it, let me know how it goes!
