Welcome to the roots practice

We believe in science-supported approaches which leverage our natural human roots (moving the body, herbs, breathing, food, connecting, talking…). This is pertinent in an age where it seems that quick fixes, by potentially complicated solutions, are pervasive, and siloed health care prevails. We aim to rebel against this paradigm and provide an alternative in supporting the wellness of human beings.

Guided by these values and supported by formal training as a medicinal herbalist and massage therapist, personal trainer, yoga instructor, and counsellor, we support people to live healthier, more enjoyable lives. Our approach is science-based, influenced by appropriate theoretical backing, and supported by continued education and relevant expert supervision.

We have experience supporting people with mental health concerns as well as chronic physical health conditions, both through our combined holistic wellness approach and as individual practitioners. We look forward to meeting you and discussing how we might support you.

Meet Katheryna!

Ciao! I’m Katheryna. I inherited an interest for everything ‘esoteric’ and ‘healing’ from my grandmother, who was a well-known Tarot card reader and healer in Uruguay. In my early life, I explored different realms of healing before becoming certified colour therapist. Moving to Edinburgh inspired me to learn more about herbalism and so I enrolled in the Diploma course in Herbology at the Royal Botanical Garden of Edinburgh. This, in turn, inspired me to further formalise my knowledge and training in the medical application of herbs. I subsequently completed the BSc (Hons) Clinical Herbalism at the Lincoln College (first). Building on the basic massage I learned during my colour therapy diploma, I am also a certified Swedish Massage therapist with a diploma from the Scottish Massage School.

Meet Mikaela

Hi, I’m Mikaela. I’m passionate about bringing together uncomplicated elements to support wellbeing. I love learning, sport, being outdoors, and generally moving my body. For most of my life I’ve trained for a variety of sports (wrestling, football, rugby, triathlon). After working in marketing for almost 15 years, I formalised my passion for mind and body movement by becoming a yoga teacher (200hr) and certified personal trainer (ACE, REPs level 3) and attained an MSc in Psychology of Mental Health from University of Edinburgh (with distinction). My focus is on helping others regardless of shape, size, ability, or gender build a healthy and balanced body and mind. I greatly enjoy supporting my clients toward their goals whether it’s generally better days, running a marathon or working on balance, bone density, and flexibility. When I’m not laughing (core work) with Katheryna, I can be found studying and finishing up my doctorate in Counselling Psychology in Glasgow and reading and evaluating research on the connection between physical activity and mental health.

Personal training and yoga qualifications: ACE, REPs Level 3, Yoga 200hr trained (vinyasa)

Mental Health/Counselling qualifications: BACP registered, NCS accredited, MSc psychology of mental health (University of Edinburgh, awarded with distinction)
